Man brandishing a hammer and carrying two kitchen knives was shot and wounded by police after he tried to attack two police officers outside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Tuesday, authorities said.
The man yelled, “It’s for Syria!” as he came after the officers, French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said.
Police said they fired on him after he threatened them and passersby in the crowded terrace outside the cathedral, then struck one officer in the head with the hammer. The attacker, described as an Algerian carrying a student ID, was taken to a hospital as police and soldiers on high alert for terrorist attacks rushed to the scene.
